He and his top economic advisers have admitted that they foresee unemployment continuing to rise but, as of yet, refuse to advocate an adequate stimulus package. Instead you are hearing rhetoric from top policy circles about how this is the "New Normal" - a phrase that carries the implication that the American people should just get used to it.

The worse the economy gets, the more likely it is that Republicans will nominate Mitt Romney, and if that happens and things still haven't improved by November 2012, we'll have a new president in January 2013.Matthew Rozsahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15367038702735883624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273177060431017102.post-3027753112026135752010-10-05T00:32:44.208-04:002010-10-05T00:32:44.208-04:001) Just for the record, I'm not too fond of pe...1) Just for the record, I'm not too fond of people posting comments without identifying themselves.

2) I agree that the issues you brought up about Romney could damage his campaign, although I disagree with your assertion that he's "dead in the water." Even though his Mormonism and health care reform initiatives are relatively well-known among his party's base, he's still constantly among the top three contenders when GOP primary voters are polled. That doesn't mean that these factors won't ultimately take him down, but to act as if they've already done so doesn't jive with the data.

3) The current method of determining unemployment rates is the same as the one used in the 1980s, so the effect on Reagan's numbers versus Obama's numbers is probably analogous.Matthew Rozsahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15367038702735883624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3273177060431017102.post-3257863023678694322010-10-04T21:56:37.659-04:002010-10-04T21:56:37.659-04:00Romney is dead in the water in the modern Republic...Romney is dead in the water in the modern Republican party- "Obamacare" is a more conservative version of Romney Care and it is electoral poison among the American right which right now doesn't have a pragmatic bone in its body politic. The Dominionist Movement and its sympathizers also aren't too fond of Mormons.

As for Obama and Reagan vis a vi the employment numbers, the significant distinction is that real unemployment in this country is an order of magnitude worse than it was in the early 1980's, because our current method of determining the rate is much more disingenuous- Obama's situation is much more dire.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
